THE GAMBIA …"The Smiling Coast" as it has been referred to for many years, is a genuine and befitting accolade to the Gambian people who tirelessly provide a warm and friendly welcome to overseas visitors.
The Gambia is the smallest country in West Africa being only 30kms wide and 70km long with Senegal bordering on three sides and the Atlantic coastline consisting of glorious white beaches.
It has been made famous in the rest of the world by Alex Haley, author of Roots, tracing his ancestors back to the village of Juffure. "Roots" and the TV serialization of this novel directed the eyes of the world on to the plight of the Africans that were taken into slavery and their struggle for emancipation.
Banjul is the capital of Gambia. Until 1973, it was known as Bathhurst. Banjul is a port city on the Atlantic Ocean and lies near the mouth of the Gambia River.
The spontaneous smile and friendliness of Gambians gave the country the name "the smiling Coast", which represents the sunny and peaceful side of the Gambia.
Welcome to Gambia, the smiling coast of Africa..............
