Rwanda is a small country with its modern capital, Kigali, at the centre. From here the roads radiate outwards like the spokes of a wheel, so you may need to spend a night here as part of some itineraries. Kigali gets relatively few tourists so do not expect organized attractions.
Instead take a stroll around one or two of its lively markets; you’ll usually be met with great friendliness. Alternatively consider visiting the new and insightful Kigali Genocide Museum, which not only details the Rwanda’s tragic history, but also documents the history of genocide around the world.
Of great interest to some is the grave of Dian Fossey, the pioneer of gorilla research and subject of the Hollywood blockbuster "Gorillas in the Mist”.
Murdered by poachers in 1985 she is buried at the Karisoke Research Centre amidst the graves of her research subjects.
Rwanda is the best travel destination in Africa to see the critically endangered mountain gorilla. A Gorilla trekking adventure through dripping, misty rainforest to sit peacefully with these inquisitive giant primates is a humbling, and for many, enlightening experience.
